What is Love Anyway?
I read a book along time ago in my desire to live in love. I was having trouble in my relationships and was tiered of always blaming the other person for not understanding me and my love for them. So I decided to do some research on the topic of love, so I could teach them how to love me. Come to find out it doesn’t work that way. This book started me on the path that I walk on today. It started out with some premises that we would all do well to consider when discussing love. If you desire to know something, anything, you cannot will this knowledge into being it must be studied, dissected, turned inside out and examined. Just like a car mechanic wanting to know about cars, and how to fix them. Anyway, This book set some premises for my education in love and I would like to share them with you. So, I will quote from this book to be sure I have them correct.
” One cannot give what he does not possess. To give love you must possess love”. Sounds pretty simple doesn’t? Yet, this is done all the time.
” One cannot know what he does not study. To study love you must live in love”. Pretty straight foreword more study is needed and more living in love, got that.
” One cannot appreciate what he does not recognize. To recognize love you must be receptive to love”. Oh man, did that hit home for me. I was not appreciating the love these relationships were sharing, because I wasn’t receptive to their love. Don’t let this happen to you!
” One cannot live what he does not dedicate himself to. To dedicate yourself to love, you must be forever growing in love”. Grow in love, yes I love this, that’s dedication. I don’t fall in or out of love, I grow in love.
” One cannot admit what he does not yield to. To yield to love you must be vulnerable to love”. Hey, wait a minute. I have to be vulnerable. That makes me weak. Not!
” One cannot have doubt about that which he wishes to trust. To trust love one must be convinced of love”. Does doubt and love really go together? Can they coexist in the same thought? Nay, Nay, I say.
Last but not least. We need more people doing this very thing. What’s amazing! There are more of us doing this very thing. How wonderful.
” One cannot teach what he does not understand. To teach love you must comprehend love”. What does comprehend mean?
Let’s see what Webster Dictionary has to say. Comprehend: To understand, grasp the meaning or significance of, esp. by and effort of sympathy || To include education comprehends the training of many kinds of ability.
One more check, Let’s see what the American Standard Dictionary has to say. Comprehend: To grasp mentally; understand or know. 2. To take in, include or embrace; comprise.
I personally like the American Standard Dictionary because it also gives you the root concept in the appendix, which is were the English language get’s it meaning for the word and what language the word came from because English is a mixing and blending of languages.
Let’s go to the root word or concept which is “ghend” Germanic: To seize, take. Old Norse: To get, to acquire. Old English: To get. Old Swedish and Middle English: To guess. Latin: To get a hold of, seize, grasp.
Ok I get it now. I personally would change the last premise to, “One cannot teach what he does not understand”. To teach love you must be love.
Because in my growing in love. I found that, Love is open arms. If you close your arms around love, you will find that you are left holding only yourself. I understand now why those relationships failed.
Thank you for letting me pour my heart out all over this page. Be love!
