Hummingbird, the creature that opens the Heart. Hummingbird Medicine is the power that touches your heart.
Lizard Medicine, represents the Dream World and the Art of Dreaming.
The other parts of reality we humans experience while our physical body rests. We spend one-third of our life asleep in dreams. Using this time to our benefit is what Lizard Medicineis implying. Using our energy body to travel beyond the stars into other parallel realities and dimensional shifts. When Lizard Medicine speaks listen to your own intuition above anyone else’s.
Pay close attention to your dreams for they show the shadowy side of reality, the Dream World. Where we can review our dreams before we manifest them physically. Since we spend one-third of our life in the Dream World, we do not perceive that Dream World when awake. Dreams become shadows showing our fears and hopes.
What we humans truly are, (Energetic Vibrational Consciousness.) Getting to know our Energy Body makes traveling in the Dream World reality much easier.
Make a dream log and record your dreams. Look for your symbolic and recurring dreams and study them carefully. In “Dreamland, the Art of Dreaming” there is a technique for developing your consciousness during dreams to be fully awake and fully functional. No sense in wasting that time in the Dream World. Get busy, Manifest!
Lizard Medicine also teaches to become more detached in life. Sometimes it is necessary to separate oneself from others to accomplish what is necessary. Lizard Medicine helps you awaken the ability for objective detachment. To show one how to break from the past to live in the now. In all realities you may wish to visit.
Lizard… will you dream of me tonight? Travel across the stars in flight? Beyond the place of time and space. With visions from afar manifested in light.
Lizard sat lolling in the shadow of a big rock, shading himself from the desert sun. Snake crawled by, looking for some shadow to coil up in and rest. Snake watched Lizard for a while as Lizard’s eyeballs went side to side behind his enormous closed lids. Snake hissed to get Lizard’s attention. Slowly Lizard’s dreaming eyes opened and he saw Snake.
“Snake! You scared me! What do you want? ” Lizard cried.
Snake spit his answer from his forked tongue. “Lizard, you are always getting the best shadow spots in the heat of the day. This is the only big rock for miles. Why don’t you share your shade with me?”
Lizard thought for a moment, then agreed. “Snake, you can share my shade spot, but you have to go to the other side of the rock and you must promise not to interrupt me.”
Snake was getting annoyed. He hissed, “How could I bother you Lizard? All you are doing is sleeping.”
Lizard smiled knowingly. “Oh Snake, you are such a silly serpent. I’m not sleeping. I’m dreaming.”
Snake wanted to know what the difference was, so Lizard explained. “Dreaming is going into the future, Snake. I go to where the future lives. You see, that is why I know you won’t eat me today. I dreamed you and I know you are full of Mouse.”
Snake was taken aback. “Why Lizard, you’re exactly right. I wondered why you said you would share your rock.”
Lizard laughed to himself. “Snake,” he said, “you are looking for shade and I am looking for shadow. Shadow is where the dreams live.”
Lizard Medicine is the shadow side of reality where your dreams are reviewed before you decide to manifest them physically. Lizard could have created getting eaten by Snake if he had so desired.
Lizard Medicine is of Dreamers. Whether dreamers smoke you or dream you, dreamers can always help you see the shadow. This shadow can be your fears, your hopes, or the very thing you are resisting, but it is always following you around like an obedient dog.
If Lizard dreamed a space in your path today, it may be time to look and see what is following along behind you. Is it your fears, your future trying to catch up to you, or is it the part of you that wants to ignore your weaknesses and humanness? Lizard Medicine may be telling you to pay attention to your dreams and their symbols. If you do not remember your dreams you could try setting a music alarm for 2am or 3am. Or try drinking a lot of water before bedtime and allow your bladder to wake you up. Dreams are very important. Pay attention to them.
Contrary Lizard Medicine
If Lizard turned up in the contrary position, you may be having a nightmare. This is a sign of inner conflict. Look to the nightmare for a clue to the nature of this conflict. What are the feelings your nightmare causes. Breathe through these feelings and let the sensations flow out of your body. See the truth in what your nightmare is suggesting. It could be the simple message that you are confronting your fears and therefore do not need to experience the nightmarish events in your day-to-day life.
Another message of Lizard Medicine reversed is that you may need more sleep or Dreamtime. It could also imply that you have a lack of dreams for your future. Imagination is the door to all new ideas and creations. As you examine the dreaming process, you will find that the subconscious is processing all the recorded messages it holds concerning the events you experienced during the day. These messages can be suppressed feelings bringing inner conflict, or they can be new ideas or goals, other dimensions of awareness, future events, warning signals, or desires and hopes.
In one sense, contrary Lizard Medicine is insisting that you look to your imagination for new experience. This is necessary when life becomes dull or full of boredom. On the other hand, contrary Lizard Medicine may also apply to those who dream too much, refusing to use the dreams as tools to manifest that same vision in their lives. All levels of awareness are accessible through dreams. Remember, life is not always as it seems.
Are you the dreamer? Or are you the dreamed?
Lizard Facts and Folklore
According to those who know about such things, there are some 2100 species of lizards, varying in size from a few inches to the so-called Komodo Dragon, which is ten feet in length. As many species actively warm themselves in the sun and some have the ability to replace a lost tail, they have long been held an object of awe and curiosity.
Generally held is the idea that the lizard is either a god, a kin to the god, or his messenger. For instance, in Samoa, several gods exist in lizard form. For the Maoris, Tangaloa, the Heaven God, is believed to incarnate as a green lizard. Tongaiti, the Night Heaven God of the Hervery Islanders of Polynesia, was believed to be a nocturnal spotted lizard. In Australia, the Aranda believe that the sky will fall if they kill a lizard. (Not recommended!)
One of the most significant characteristics of some lizards and their claim to fame is the ability of the tail to come off. A predator may grab for it, its paw upon the tail, only to be surprised as the tail breaks off and the lizard scampers to freedom. The lizard then begins the process of growing another in its place. Unfortunately, a lizard can only do this once because the tail grows back cartilage instead of vertebrae.
Since some lizards have the ability to regenerate their own tail, sometimes an abnormal two-tailed lizard may appear. Italians regard such a two-tailed lizard as being unusually lucky. In Samoa, the lizard is believed to be the sun and is said to possess the ability to ask the Weather God for good weather. One Christian tradition in Germany holds that the lizard licked away Christ’s drops of blood, and therefore, should never be killed. In Sicily, small lizards, called “San Giovanni,” are never killed, since they are believed to be in the presence of the Lord in Heaven and to light the Lord’s lamp.
Among Jewish folklore, the lizard was held unclean and was believed born of sexual intercourse between Satan and a witch. In fact, in some areas of France, lizards were buried alive under the threshold as a protection against witchcraft. In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, lizard is one of the ingredients of the witches’ brew. For the Slavs and some French and English peasants, the lizard was held as protection against snakes and was often fixed on the roof of a stable to ward them off. For a lizard to cross the path of a bride was believed to produce an unhappy marriage. In some parts of the United Kingdom it is believed that, if a lizard sees a snake approaching a sleeping man, the Lizard will awaken him.
The lizard is the expert at subtle perception. It can sense vibrations through the ground. Its eyes can detect the subtlest of movements, and it has extremely acute hearing. All of these are symbolic of specific forms of clairvoyance practiced in many societies.
Lizard is an animal of great subtlety. Its movements are quick. It has four legs and can run with great speed. Some lizards can live in the house, and they help to control the insect populations. The gecko lizard is one of the few reptiles that has a voice, and this should be meditated upon by anyone that has it as a totem. The Komodo Dragon of Indonesia is a monitor lizard, and it is the largest of all lizards.
A lizard has an ability to recognize the subtlest insect movements, and can remain still or relatively so to mislead its prey or protect itself. This indicates that your intuition and psychic perceptions are either already active or about to be activated more strongly. Pay attention.
Most lizards have long tails which help them maintain balance and can also serve as a defense mechanism. Most also have a crested back, ruffs, or spines. These serve as protection but they are also very symbolic. Some have ruffs about the neck. The neck is an area that bridges the higher and lower, and lizards with them are those that can teach you how to bridge the subconscious with the conscious, dreaming with waking. They can stimulate lucid dreaming.
The antidote to all karma is to realize the Self, the divine actor in the play of Maya. The way that karma can harm is through your “view” and subsequent beliefs that are born from it. Release limitations and be free. This is what is meant by the teaching that a “house divided” will fall by serving two masters (soul vs. ego/ordinary mind.)
Though the path of ego/ordinary mind is the “default setting,” and easy to fall into, its frustrations can be high. Though the path of the Self/Spirit is more arduous at times, its gifts are infinite.
This reptile in a dream is warning that you have false friends in your close circle. A dead lizard signifies a successful battle to protect your reputation. Shoes, bags, or other items made of lizard skin predict an increase in income. Because of its primitive origins, many psychologists view this as an emblem of the Collective Unconsciousness or wild nature within. In Egypt and Greece, an omen of luck. African: Transformation and the ability to adapt to your surroundings. Here the lizard is regarded as a shape-shifter. Lizards are very sensitive to land vibrations, and have very good hearing and keen eyesight, making them symbolic of awareness, especially psychically. Impartiality and the ability to break away from various situations.
If Lizard Medicine appears, we need to analyze our present reality and thus, bring the message for immediate change in some area or areas of our life. This change can represent letting go of old ideas or negative behaviors which endanger your growth.
All of these characteristics give it a symbolism associated with the psychic and the intuitive. The ability to perceive subtle movement, physical and ethereal, waking or sleeping, is what Lizard Medicine teaches. To some within the Native American tradition, the lizard is associated with Dreamtime. Dreams contain some of the subtlest perceptions of the mind of which we may not be conscious. They are translated to us through dreams to make us more conscious. These can be fears or foreshadowings, but almost always they are the things to which we do not pay attention.
Individuals with a lizard totem should listen to their own intuition above anyone else’s. Lizard usually reflects heightened sensitivity. You feel what others may not. You will see things that others may miss. You will hear things that are not being said. No matter how strange it may seem, learning to follow those perceptions is what will enable one to succeed most often.

Raccoon Medicine implies creativity, dexterity, adaptability, thievery, curiosity, protection, shape-shifting, and discovering secrets.
I walked outside side for my usually evening conversation with deer friends. After our greetings they brought my attention to a new friend standing in the background. As I looked, out of the darkness stepped Bandito, with Raccoon Medicine. He was sitting under the bird feeder picking up bird seed that had fallen to the ground.
As I watch in amazement at how ambidextrous he was, I greeted him, he looked at me from behind his mask, and taught me this lesson in Raccoon Medicine.
“Set aside any doubts you have and know that the resources you need will be there for you. Adopt a relaxed attitude; open yourself up to the joy, curiosity and open-ended exploration of life.”
Be aware of any signs, omens one may be getting from those close, or from the other side. My deer friends agreed. He went on to say, Raccoon Medicine brings the gifts of: Curiosity, Exploration, Night Vision, Eating Raw, the magic of Keeping Secrets, using Masks, and Connecting to Trees.”
The magic of the Raccoon Medicine is in its mask, my tiny hands perform the task. No stone unturned, looking for that juicy worm. Something to eat, would be really sweet. Your transformation is here, thanks to the deer. Now is the time to let go of your fear.
When Raccoon Medicine crosses ones path it is a good sign. He is a good protector. Raccoon is intelligent, cunning, clean, and very helpful. When one doesn’t know how to do something, make prayers, and a wish to Raccoon. Leave him some food, he will show how to resolve the problem !!!
Raccoon Medicine can also be used as doctor power, hunting power, and protection power. Should one ever get lost in the woods in Nature, just ask Raccoon to help. He likes helping humanity.
When Raccoon Medicine makes its presence known in your life, this little bandit may be saying, look around, see your strength at this time. It may be time to share your energy with some less fortunate. At the same time, Raccoon asks you to honor yourself, provide for your own needs, sow that you have enough power to give energy generously when it’s needed.
Raccoon Medicine people have the uncanny ability to assist others without allowing them to become dependents. Raccoon selflessly tends to the needs of the tribe, before taking anything for itself. Raccoon teaches us the universal law of giving back to the source of our strength, guidance, and protection. We are reminded, benevolence and generosity always come full circle. What goes around, comes around.
This creature-teacher, teaches us to find what we are looking for, and take only what we need… His association to thievery or stealth is quite common because of this.
His digging for food is the method we can apply to digging for knowledge. The mask he wears teaches, by utilizing the power of masks, or the power of shape-shifting, we can succeed.
Shape-shifting teaches one to become what you want to know more about, you can discover the secrets hidden behind others and their ways. This leads to exciting adventures and explorations of the dimensional shifts and altered states of consciousness.
Raccoon is a problem solver from way back. He has an innate curiosity, about how things work, and will encourage one to discover new ideas, and methods of achieving our goals. Intelligence is one of his strong points; combined with adaptability, and a playful nature he becomes an interesting and powerful teacher.
Raccoon Medicine can show how to live in the Now, taking full advantage of the spirit worlds. His sense of family and hunting will serve well in providing for our own needs. Raccoon is a healer and uses the qualities of water to increase sensitivity, cleanse, purify, and soothing.
Raccoons are fascinating animals. They are distantly related to the bear, thus Bear Medicine should be studied as well by anyone with this totem.
The Raccoon is one of the most adaptable animals, and in spite of encroachment on its natural habitat, it is able to live within the city. The name RACCOON is believed to come from the Algonquin Indian word “arckunem,” meaning “hand scratcher.”
The paws are very dexterous. Raccoons can be expert at opening lids, latches, and doorknobs. Keep an eye on the cat or dog door! They will welcome themselves to your pantry. Because they often have the reputation for thievery. Being able to get into things they are not supposed to.
It would not be surprising to find individuals who are thieves and burglars have Raccoon Medicine, even though it is not being used positively.
The Raccoon will eat almost anything available. It will capture small prey but it usually eats mostly vegetables and fruits. This is something that those with Raccoon Medicine should keep in mind.
Raccoons are extremely curious, which is partly why they often get into things they shouldn’t. They love to explore. Their nocturnal excursions can be likened to mini-adventures. They can be very curious about new realms and will examine anything that fascinates them.
Raccoons are fascinated by water. They like to slosh their hands, and their food in it. This gives rise to the belief they never eat anything without washing it first. Actually, water increases the sensitivity of the Raccoon’s hands, and they can feel their food better. Raccoons enjoy hollow logs, especially for their dens. They will have one to two litters per year, with 2-7 young.
At about 20 weeks a Raccoon can live on its own, they are very sociable, and where there is one Raccoon, there will usually be others. They live longer than most animals in the wild, 10 years.
When Raccoon Medicine shows up, it’s not a short-time totem, Raccoon Medicine will stay with you for a long time, seeing its influence for an extended time.
When trying to make changes, or endeavoring to hide changes you are making from others, until you are in a better position, plan on using about a 20-week cycle. This time frame will be more effective. For longer and greater life transformations, when Raccoon Medicine shows up, make longer plans. Keep alert…
Are you getting into things that you’re not supposed to?
Raccoons are notorious and rather adept thieves. A curious demeanor, eager for exploration. These are common traits of Raccoon. The Racoon’s mask represents privacy, ambiguity, and secrecy of some type. What’s being hidden and from whom? Dexterity, cleanliness, disguise, explorers, curious, secrecy helps the new transformations take place, balance curiosity with caution.
Be courageous and self-defensive when need be, this lends to the sense of socializing with the ability to see the nature of the illusions and masks others are wearing. Thus to act differently with the various people encounter each day.
Raccoon Medicine shows how to transform, this brings a new awareness to ones self. Raccoon is the Generous Protector, specifically, the protector of underdogs. Raccoon symbolizes the generous protection of providing for the young, infirm, and elderly.
Often called “little bandit” this Robin Hood animal teaches about generosity and caring for others. When Raccoon Medicine steps into the light, one is being asked to contact our “inner warrior” to become a protector, generous provider for those in need.
Raccoon is a ferocious fighter when need be, and highly temperamental. Raccoon leaves little room for those who would challenge his right to pursue his path. He will teach you to find your way and stick to it. This is the Heart of Raccoon. Follow your path with heart in it, and stick to it.
A troupe of Raccoons scouting for food is often a hilarious exercise in generosity… After selecting their favorite morsels of corn, Raccoons always give the best tidbits to their Lookouts. He is always fed first by the raiders, to honor his vigilance as the group’s protector. This uncommon lack of greed, and altruistic behavior is rare in the world of humans.
The most striking features of Raccoon is the mask that it wears. Although some associate this with thievery, it actually gives the Raccoon a very powerful mystical symbolism. Raccoon holds the knowledge of transformation through masks and disguise. This knowledge can be applied to religious and ritual practices as well, or within normal everyday life.
Don’t we all present a different face to some people for greater success? Are you hiding your true self? Are others hiding their true self? Raccoon Medicine can find the answers.
Raccoons do not hibernate, they do go into a heavy sleep during the winter, living off their body fat. This has connections to learning to use masks to put to sleep one aspect of ourself so that another can be awakened. This part of Raccoon Medicine can teach one to develop dexterity in using masks to achieve new altered states of consciousness and discover new dimensions of living.
Raccoon Medicine symbolism is a message,… we sometimes need to wear different masks, sometimes you’re a boss, you’re a mom, you’re a coach, one can wear many masks in one day, and often do. However, they are all versions of our self.
Just as with Raccoon, masks are a source of ambiguity and equivocation. When we wear a mask we are no longer who we thought. We make ourselves one with another force. We create a doorway in the mind, thus in the physical world, a threshold that we can cross to new dimensions and new states of beings.
This is the magic of Raccoon Medicine. An expert of disguise and secrecy, it knows to wear masks for a variety of purposes. It can teach us to mask and disguise, thus transform to achieve altered states, for healing, and other ritual purposes.
This practice has been a part of every society. Mask making is an ancient art employed all over the world. In Ceremony, celebration, and in magical practices. Concealed behind a mask, people become something or someone else.
We can become whatever we want, by wearing masks. Masks are invested with mystery and power. They are tools for transformation. The hidden aspect, the secrecy, helps to promote the transformation.
The Raccoon is greedy, (however so charming, he gets away with it), loves to indulge a hearty appetite with any kind of food he finds, old fish in the garbage, candy, or chicken snatched off the barbecue. Despite such clever ways, Raccoon will always share his scavenged resources. Fond of the artful theft, he steals with innocent grace that comes off as virtue.
Those with Raccoon Medicine might become irresistible enough to get away with almost anything. However, each must develop their relationship with Raccoon in their own unique way.
Raccoon Medicine can teach how to become dexterous in the masks we wear. It can show how to wear a healing mask, or show the face we wish to become. Raccoon Medicine holds the knowledge of how to change our faces.
If you are a Raccoon person, eating mostly fruits, nuts, and vegetables will be beneficial to your health.
Raccoon Medicine helps us to change what we are, to what we want to be, giving us the magic of Raccoon Medicine.
